Friendship

'In other circumstances, this would have been the start of a romance. But I think we both knew, even then, that what we had was something more rare, and even more meaningful. I was going to be his friend, and was going to show him possibilities. And he, in turn, would become someone who I could trust more than myself.'

-Paul (Boy Meets Boy, David Levithan)

Boy Meets Boy

“I know you won’t understand this but they love me. It would be much easier if they didn’t. But in their own way, they love me. They honestly believe that if I don’t straighten out, I will lose my soul. It’s not just that they don’t want me kissing other guys – they think if I do it, I will be damned. Damned, Paul. And I know that doesn’t mean anything to you. It really doesn’t mean anything to me. To them, though, it’s everything.”

-Tony (Boy Meets Boy, David Levithan)

Drummer Hodge

They throw in Drummer Hodge, to rest
Uncoffined — just as found:
His landmark is a kopje-crest
That breaks the veldt around:
And foreign constellations west
Each night above his mound.

Young Hodge the drummer never knew —
Fresh from his Wessex home —
The meaning of the broad Karoo,
The Bush, the dusty loam,
And why uprose to nightly view
Strange stars amid the gloam.

Yet portion of that unknown plain
Will Hodge for ever be;
His homely Northern breast and brain
Grow to some Southern tree,
And strange-eyed constellations reign
His stars eternally.

Defiance

'Some bloke got put in prison for three days because he refused to stop kissing his boyfriend on a plane flight to Hong Kong, how magic's that? You can't but help picturing him entirely in latex,

"Alright lads, I'm gunna make this flight fairly tense for you, Ramon, let's do the bad thing!" *mwah mwah*

"DO YOU WANNA STOP DOING THAT MATE, I'LL FETCH THE STEWARDESS!"

"Whatever." -mwah- -mwah-

'STOP DOIN' THAT IT'S NOT NATURAL!'

'You're flying.' *mwah mwah mwah*

'I'LL HAVE YOU PUT IN PRISON!'

"What with men? Think it through." -mwah- -mwah-'

Just Plain Luna

Severus swam with mermaids and ran with unicorns. He played games with Blinky and rode green and blue-checkered horses.

And there was Luna, who was maddening and enchanting. Beautiful and frightening. Implausible. Irrational. Preposterous. Peculiar. Insane and yet, the most sensible person he had ever met. Severus had not kissed her again after that one time, but he thought of it everyday.

They didn't gave a damn about the lawn

"They said nothing and our parents said nothing, so we sensed how ancient they were, how accustomed to trauma, depressions, and wars. We realized that the version of the world they rendered for us was not the world they really believed in, and for all their caretaking and bitching about crabgrass they didn't give a damn about lawns."

Girls

· 'We could never understand why the girls cared so much about being mature, or why they felt compelled to compliment each other, but sometimes, after one of us had read a long portion of the diary out loud, we had to fight back the urge to hug one another and to tell each other how pretty we were. We felt the imprisonment of being a girl, the way it made your mind active and dreamy, and how you ended up knowing which colors went together.'

Contradiction

'We live in a contradiction: a brutal state of affairs, profoundly inegalitarian—where all existence is evaluated in terms of money alone—is presented to us as ideal. To justify their conservatism, the partisans of the established order cannot really call it ideal or wonderful. So instead, they have decided to say that all the rest is horrible. Sure, they say, we may not live in a condition of perfect Goodness. But we're lucky that we don't live in a condition of Evil. Our democracy is not perfect. But it's better than the bloody dictatorships. Capitalism is unjust. But it's not criminal like Stalinism. We let millions of Africans die of AIDS, but we don't make racist nationalist declarations like Milosevic. We kill Iraqis with our airplanes, but we don't cut their throats with machetes like they do in Rwanda, etc.'

"Bloody hell" he muttered, then smiled, because that was Ron's favorite swear. Then frowned because that was Ron's favorite swear. Then rolled over and try to ignore the tightening in his groin because that was Ron's favorite swear. Cassie

Cassie,

I'm shit with words, everything always comes out so crap. But I've been doing some thinking and everything is getting clearer. The thing is Cass, I've woken up this morning and the sun's shining through the window and it's making me think of you.
Cassie, it's not right, you hiding away in that clinic. You've got to get out in the world.Cassie, I don't care if you think you're odd, because I feel like singing when I see you. And you're beautiful. And I've been such a fucking chapstick this past few weeks. And all I want to do this morning is sit on top of Brandon Hill and hold you, and tell you how wonderful you are, and stick my hand down your knickers
and I love you.

Unpredictable

"Change. It’s a wonderful thing. Look, you know how subatomic particles don’t obey physical laws? They act according to chance, chaos, coincidence. They run into each other in the middle of the universe somewhere and bang! Energy! We’re the same as that. That’s the great thing about the universe: unpredictable. That’s why it’s so much fun."

Bright Star, would I were steadfast as thou art

BRIGHT star! would I were steadfast as thou art—
Not in lone splendour hung aloft the night,
And watching, with eternal lids apart,
Like Nature’s patient sleepless Eremite,
The moving waters at their priestlike task 5
Of pure ablution round earth’s human shores,
Or gazing on the new soft fallen mask
Of snow upon the mountains and the moors—
No—yet still steadfast, still unchangeable,
Pillow’d upon my fair love’s ripening breast, 10
To feel for ever its soft fall and swell,
Awake for ever in a sweet unrest,
Still, still to hear her tender-taken breath,
And so live ever—or else swoon to death.
-Bright Star! would I were steadfast thou art, John Keats

They're all real

"A stout, middle-aged man, with enormous owl-eyed spectacles, was sitting somewhat drunk on the edge of a great table, staring with unsteady concentration at the shelves of the books. As we entered he wheeled excitedly around and examined Jordan from head to foot.
'What do you think?' he demanded impetuously.

'About what?'

He waved his hand towards the bookshelves.

'About that. As a matter of fact you needn't bother to ascertain. I ascertained. They're real.'

'The books?'

He nodded.

'Absolutely real- have pages and everything. I thought they'd be a nice durable cardboard. Matter of fact, they're absolutely real. Pages and- Here! Lemme show you.'

Taking our scepticism for granted, he rushed to the bookcases and returned with Volume One of the 'Stoddard Lectures'.

'See!' he cried triumphantly. 'It's a bona-fied piece of printed matter. It fooled me. This fella's a regular Belasco*. It's a triumph. What thoroughness! What realism! Knew when to stop, too- didn't cut the pages. But what do you want? What do you expect?'"

She's so high

She's blood, flesh and bone
No tucks or silicone
She's touch, smell, sight, taste and sound

But somehow I can't believe
That anything should happen
I know where I belong
And nothing's gonna happen
Yeah, yeah

'Cause she's so high...
High above me, she's so lovely
She's so high...
Like Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, or Aphrodite
She's so high...
High above me

First class and fancy free
She's high society
She's got the best of everything

What could a guy like me
Ever really offer?
She's perfect as she can be
Why should I even bother?

'Cause she's so high...
High above me, she's so lovely
She's so high...
Like Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, or Aphrodite
She's so high...
High above me

She comes to speak to me
I freeze immediately
'Cause what she says sounds so unreal

But somehow I can't believe
That anything should happen
I know where I belong
And nothing's gonna happen
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah

'Cause she's so high...
High above me, she's so lovely
She's so high...
Like Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, or Aphrodite
She's so high...
High abov
e me

What a lot of parties

'Oh Nina, what a lot of parties... Masked parties, Savage parties, Victorian parties, Greek parties, Wild West parties, Circus parties, parties where you have to dress as somebody else, almost naked parties in St. John's Wood, parties in flats and studios and houses and ships and hotels and nightclubs, in swimming baths and windmills. Dances in London so dull. Comic dances in Scotland and disgusting dances in the suburbs. All that succession and repetition of massed humanity. All those vile bodies. And now a party in a mental hospital...'

Going round and round

'You know all that time I was dotty I had the most awful dreams. I thought we were all driving round and round at a motor-race and none of us could stop. And there was an enormous audience composed entirely of gossip writers and gate-crashers and Archie Shwert! Bogus people all shouting at us to go faster and car after car kept crashing until I was left all alone driving and driving. And then I would crash and wake up.'

It's a Wild World

'Now that I've lost everything to you
You say you wanna start something new
And it's breakin' my heart you're leavin'
Baby, I'm grievin'
But if you wanna leave, take good care
I hope you have a lot of nice things to wear
But then a lot of nice things turn bad out there

Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
It's hard to get by just upon a smile
Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
I'll always remember you like a child, girl

You know I've seen a lot of what the world can do
And it's breakin' my heart in two
Because I never wanna see you a sad girl
Don't be a bad girl
But if you wanna leave, take good care
I hope you make a lot of nice friends out there
But just remember there's a lot of bad and beware'

We are greater than the sum of our parts

'But ultimately I do not believe that she was only matter. The rest of her must be recycled too. I believe now that
we are greater than the sum of our parts. If you take Alaska's genetic code and you add her life experiences and the relationships she had with people, and then you take the size and shape of her body, you do not get her. There is something else entirely. There is a part of her greater than the sum of her knowable parts. And that part has to go somewhere, because it cannot be destroyed.'
